 Italics

A humanist called Niccolo de Niccoli, who was born and lived in Florence, was the first to use the cursive script in his copying of ancient manuscripts, a task he really rejoiced in, and this kind of handwriting became the origin of the Italics typeface in printing. Thank you sir, it's been quite useful for quite a few people through the centuries.

"The white and blue colouring of some of the flowers and foliage echoes those of the vase, complemented by the pinks, reds and touches of yellow in the other blooms. The wandering lady at the top is a detail in Leonhard Beck's painting Saint George and the dragon (painted 1513/1514. He was born in Augsburg in 1480) . It can be seen at the Kunsthistorisches museum in Vienna.

in a painting called "The miracles of St Vincent Ferrer". It was painted in 1473 by Ercole de Roberti, an Italian painter who worked in Italy in the XV century (Ferrara c. 1450-Ferrara 1496).

It is now part of the Vatican collection of paintings. It's possible to take a virtual tour online here, it's quite worth it I think.

The funny character ( ) is a detail from one of the panels that the German Renaissance painter Matthias Grünewald painted for the so called Isenheim Altarpiece. It can be now seen at the Unterlinden museum in Colmar (France). The panels depict the Temptations of Saint Anthony.

The painting is dated as early as 1515! Can you believe it?
