Notes

I recently watched the film "The untouchables" again on TV. Robert De Niro's impersonation of Al Capone is so outstanding. This character keeps reminding me of someone but I still can't quite put my finger on it.
This body language that clearly reflects character and attitude.
Nope, I can't think of anyone really.

Reflection of the day

Followers, trendsetters, influencers...does the world need a 21st century rewriting of Fromm's "Fear of freedom"?

If half of the women were happy with their hair, the other half were happy with their lips and the other half were happy with their ...er..."girls"(excuse my maths),  the amount of released energy would be enough to counteract twice the amount of testosterone running wild out there.

 Fashion is what makes you get rid of your eyebrows and then makes you buy a pen to paint them back .

I'm not a poetry person

but just for once....this is an emergency

Tu contiens dans ton oeil le couchant et l'aurore;
Tu répands des parfums comme un soir orageux;

Le Destin charmé suit tes jupons comme un chien;

Tu marches sur des morts, Beauté, dont tu te moques;

Rythme, parfum, lueur, ô mon unique reine! —

Hora, a su afán ansioso lisonjera;

Su cuerpo dejará, no su cuidado;
Serán ceniza, mas tendrá sentido;
Polvo serán, mas polvo enamorado.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Pace non trovo, et non ò da far guerra;
e temo, et spero; et ardo, et son un ghiaccio;
et volo sopra 'l cielo, et giaccio in terra;
et nulla stringo, et tutto 'l mondo abbraccio.

Tal m'à in pregion, che non m'apre né serra,
né per suo mi riten né scioglie il laccio;

Veggio senza occhi, et non ò lingua et grido;
et bramo di perir, et cheggio aita;
et ò in odio me stesso, et amo altrui.

Pascomi di dolor, piangendo rido;
egualmente mi spiace morte et vita:
in questo stato son, donna, per voi.

Did you know...?

...that the words "text" and "textile" are family?

 Why?
 Because they both derive from the latin word "textus", that meant "thing woven",

 (textus being the past participle stem of texere which meant "to weave, to join, fit together, braid, interweave, construct, fabricate, build,")

Can you think of ways in which a text is "woven"?

Yep, yet another joy thanks to the Online Etymology Dictionary

Good question to start off your day

Why isn't Laokoön shouting? Aesthetics or anaesthetics? Where's the pleasure in painful representations in art?

Maybe I shouldn't

Maybe I shouldn't.
Probably I shouldn't.
I know I shouldn't.
It sounds weird.
Irrelevant.
A bit like preaching,
Definitely not appropiate.
I should think twice...

What the ..., here I go:

WOMEN OF THE WORLD!!!!

There's no way you are ever going to become:

strong, spontaneous, romantic, sensual, femenine, mysterious, independant, assertive, interesting, charming, modern, elegant, powerful, unique, attractive, fascinating, enigmatic, self-assured or intelligent....

BY WEARING ANY KIND OF PERFUME

There, I said it, what a relief. This feels good. Thanks.

Useless wish: ancient maps vs. Google

How I wish the authors of those magnificent first maps could open their eyes for just one minute and throw a glance at Google maps.

(and how on earth can herebedragons@gmail. com be already taken?"Here be dragons" means dangerous or unexplored territories, in imitation of the medieval practice of putting dragons, sea serpents and other mythological creatures in uncharted areas of maps)

Those sweet critics

"New School-Independant painting.
Independant from their will. Let's hope it is so  for their sake"

A very visionary illustrator critizes Impressionistic painters at the time of their first exhibitions.
Where on earth did I get this from???
